Is baptism needed to be saved?

Christians genuinely disagree about this, and both sides deserve to be taken seriously rather than assuming the answer is obvious.

Some traditions—including Catholic, Orthodox, Lutheran, and others—read passages like "unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God" as teaching that baptism is the normal means God uses to actually give new spiritual life, not a symbol added afterward.

Most other Protestants read Scripture as teaching salvation comes through faith alone, with baptism commanded as an important act of obedience and public identification with Jesus—but not the thing that saves you. They often point to the criminal dying next to Jesus, promised paradise with no baptism at all, as evidence it isn't strictly required.

In practice, nearly every Christian tradition agrees baptism matters and shouldn't be skipped or delayed without good reason. Christians mainly disagree about exactly what baptism does, not whether it's important.
