Did the universe need a cause?

Philosophers disagree, and this remains a genuinely contested question rather than one with a clean, settled answer.

One influential argument, sometimes called the cosmological argument, reasons that whatever begins to exist has a cause, the universe began to exist, and therefore the universe has a cause—identified by many who make this argument as God. Each step has been challenged. Some philosophers question whether "whatever begins to exist has a cause" holds universally, pointing to certain interpretations of quantum events as apparently uncaused. Others question whether we can be fully confident the universe truly "began," given some cosmological models that remain speculative and unsettled.

Defenders respond that quantum events still arise from prior physical conditions rather than absolute nothingness, and that leading cosmological evidence does favor a genuine beginning. Neither side has convinced the other, and this remains active, ongoing debate among physicists and philosophers of religion alike.
