If God can stop evil, why doesn't he?

This question actually contains two different questions. There's evil people cause—cruelty, violence, lies. And there's evil nobody chose, like disease or natural disasters. Christianity doesn't answer both the same way.

For evil people cause, the common Christian answer is that real love requires real freedom. Real freedom means people can genuinely choose to harm instead of help. Take away that freedom, and you take away real love too.

That answer works less well for suffering nobody caused. Christians have offered other ideas: that creation itself is broken and "groaning," or that some suffering shapes people in ways comfort alone can't. None of these fully satisfy everyone, including many thoughtful Christians.

Philosophers split this into two questions. Does evil make God's existence logically impossible? Most now think it doesn't. Does the sheer amount of evil count as strong evidence against God existing anyway? That question is still seriously, genuinely debated.
