Life & Faith
How can I tell the difference between faith and an unhealthy religious fear?
A helpful place to start: real faith tends to draw you closer to God, while unhealthy religious fear tends to make you want to hide from him, or exhaust yourself trying to stay ahead of his disapproval.
Scripture directly connects real love with the absence of a certain kind of fear: "There is no fear in love; instead, perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment" (1 John 4:18). This isn't saying Christians should feel nothing—it's describing a fear rooted in expecting punishment, different from healthy reverence or conscience.
Paul writes to Timothy, who seems to have struggled with anxiety himself: "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but one of power, love, and sound judgment" (2 Timothy 1:7). Fear is explicitly named as something God didn't give.
If your relationship with God mostly feels like walking on eggshells, constantly checking whether you've done enough, that's worth talking through with a pastor or counselor familiar with religious anxiety. It's a real, treatable struggle—not proof you're failing at faith.
