Was Jesus copied from older pagan stories?

Specific claims like this need to be checked individually. Some are simply false. Others involve real, disputed scholarly questions—lumping them all together, in either direction, gets this wrong.

Popular claims about Horus—a virgin birth, twelve disciples, a December 25 birthday, crucifixion and resurrection—aren't found in actual ancient Egyptian sources. These specific claims trace to 19th-century pseudo-scholarship and modern internet content, not real Egyptology. They don't hold up when checked against the primary texts.

Mithras is more seriously studied by real historians, but here too, popular claims are overstated. Ancient sources describe Mithras born from a rock, not a virgin. There's no ancient evidence of a Mithras resurrection "on the third day."

Whether any genuine pre-Christian "dying and rising god" traditions existed at all is a real, disputed question among serious scholars. Some say a few rare, weaker examples exist. Others say the whole category has been overstated. What's well established: the resurrection claim about Jesus was already being preached within a few years of his death—too soon for slow, distant mythological borrowing to explain.
