If following Jesus changes people, why is that change sometimes so hard to see?

Partly because real change is often quiet, internal, and gradual in a way that resists easy outside observation—closer to something growing underground than something happening on a stage.

Jesus himself describes growth this way: "The kingdom of God is like this... A man scatters seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day; the seed sprouts and grows, although he doesn't know how" (Mark 4:26–27). Even the person planting doesn't fully see or understand the process while it's happening.

Paul makes a similar observation about his own experience: "our outer person is being destroyed, our inner person is being renewed day by day" (2 Corinthians 4:16). The renewal he's describing is happening beneath the surface, often invisible to a casual outside glance, even while it's genuinely real.

Character change—patience gained slowly, bitterness released bit by bit, honesty chosen in small daily moments—usually doesn't announce itself. It shows up more in how someone responds to a hard Tuesday than in any single dramatic, visible before-and-after moment.
