Can I be Christian and support same-sex marriage?

Christians who take Scripture seriously genuinely disagree about this—worth knowing plainly rather than pretending there's one easy answer.

The historic teaching of the whole church—Catholic, Orthodox, and the great majority of Protestants, across nearly two thousand years—holds marriage as one man and one woman, rooted in Genesis 2:24 and reaffirmed by Jesus himself (Matthew 19:4–6). In recent decades, some Christians and a number of denominations, mostly within mainline Protestantism, have concluded that committed same-sex relationships can also reflect Christian marriage—both by reading key biblical texts as addressing something different from modern committed relationships, and by appealing to love as Scripture's deeper guiding principle (Romans 13:8–10).

Being a Christian, at its core, means trusting in Jesus—his death, resurrection, and lordship—not passing a test on every ethical question. Christians have genuinely disagreed on hard questions throughout history while still sharing the same core faith.

This is a weighty disagreement, not a small one, and deserves honest engagement with Scripture, wise community, and prayer—not a quick answer from any single source, including this one.
