Why was Moses not allowed into the Promised Land?

Moses led Israel for forty years, but Numbers 20 describes a specific moment where God told him he would not enter Canaan himself—only see it from a distance before he died.

The people were again complaining about lack of water, and God told Moses to speak to a rock so it would produce water. Instead, Moses angrily struck the rock twice with his staff, saying, "Must we bring water out of this rock for you?" (Numbers 20:10)—seeming to take credit himself rather than pointing to God.

God's response was direct: "Because you did not trust me to demonstrate my holiness in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this assembly into the land I have given them" (Numbers 20:12). This wasn't a small slip—it was a public failure, by Israel's own leader, to represent God accurately to the people he was leading.

It's a sobering story about leadership: greater responsibility can come with a higher standard, even for someone as faithful as Moses across decades of service.
