How could Noah fit all the animals on the ark?

The Bible gives the ark real dimensions: 450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet high (Genesis 6:15)—roughly the size of a modern cargo ship, far bigger than picture-book images suggest.

God's instruction wasn't to bring every individual animal on Earth, but "two of everything... according to their kinds" (Genesis 6:20)—a category that likely means broader groups, closer to "family" than "species" in modern biology. Many species alive today would count as varieties of a smaller number of original "kinds."

If the flood covered the whole globe, this stays a genuinely hard question, one Christians who hold that view have proposed various answers to. If the flood was regional—a view held by many other Christians, explored in the previous question—only the animals of that region needed a place, which considerably eases the challenge.

Either way, this is a real puzzle worth sitting with honestly, not a reason to abandon the story—ancient readers knew this was an extraordinary claim too.
