Can a Christian be affected by demons?

Christians disagree on the exact details, but most Christian traditions agree on this: a genuine believer cannot be "possessed" in the sense of owned or controlled by a demon against their will, because they belong to Christ. But that doesn't mean Christians are simply immune to any spiritual attack or struggle.

Peter warns believers—not unbelievers—to "be sober-minded, be alert," because "your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion" (1 Peter 5:8). That warning wouldn't make sense if Christians faced zero spiritual opposition.

Many theologians distinguish between possession (a demon controlling someone) and oppression or temptation (a demon influencing, harassing, or attacking someone from outside). Most agree Christians can experience the second even though they're protected from the first.
