Are demons real?
The Bible's answer is yes. Demons appear throughout Scripture as real spiritual beings opposed to God—not just old-fashioned language for mental illness or bad luck.
The Gospels show Jesus repeatedly confronting demons, commanding them, and freeing people from their influence. Paul describes a real spiritual conflict: "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness" (Ephesians 6:12).
Most Christian traditions understand demons as fallen angels—spiritual beings who rebelled against God alongside Satan. The Bible doesn't explain this origin in exhaustive detail, but it consistently treats demons as real, intelligent, and hostile to God and to human flourishing, not simply as symbols for evil in general.
It's worth being careful here too: the Bible doesn't treat every illness or hardship as demonic. Ancient and modern superstition can go too far in the other direction—seeing a demon behind every problem.
