What is the mark of the beast?

The "mark of the beast" comes from Revelation 13, a highly symbolic book written in coded, picture-like language for persecuted Christians. John describes a beast that forces everyone to take a mark on their hand or forehead—without it, "no one can buy or sell." He adds a puzzle: "the number of the beast...is 666."

Many scholars think John's first readers would have connected this to Rome and its emperor. Adding up the letters in "Nero Caesar" using an old counting trick called gematria equals 666. On that reading, the mark stood for loyalty to a corrupt, God-opposing power—not a modern gadget or barcode.

Christians read this differently today. Some expect a specific future ruler and a literal mark. Others see a repeating pattern of ungodly power showing up throughout history. Either way, the warning stays the same: don't give your deepest loyalty to anything except God.
