Why did Jesus perform miracles?

John's Gospel repeatedly calls Jesus' miracles "signs," a word choice that matters: signs point beyond themselves to something else, rather than existing simply to impress or entertain. John states his purpose directly—these signs were written down "so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God."

The miracles also connect to specific Old Testament expectations. Isaiah describes the coming era of God's promised deliverance in terms of exactly the kinds of healing Jesus performed—the blind seeing, the deaf hearing, the lame walking—giving his contemporaries a specific, recognizable framework for understanding what his miracles meant.

Compassion was also a genuine, stated motive throughout the Gospels, not merely a byproduct of proving a point. Jesus' miracles consistently responded to real human suffering—illness, hunger, grief, isolation—suggesting they expressed real care alongside their function as evidence of who he was.
