Was Jesus really sinless?

This is a claim the New Testament makes repeatedly and directly: Hebrews describes Jesus as tempted "in every way as we are, yet without sin," Peter writes that "he did not commit sin," and Paul says he was one "who did not know sin."

It's worth being honest about what kind of claim this is. Unlike Jesus' existence or crucifixion, sinlessness isn't something historians can independently verify through outside sources—it's a theological conviction resting on trust in the New Testament's own consistent testimony, not a claim external evidence could confirm or disprove on its own.

What is notable, historically, is the absence of any recorded confession, repentance, or moral failure from Jesus anywhere in the Gospels—a genuinely unusual feature compared to how honestly the same texts describe the flaws of virtually every other major figure, including the disciples and even key Old Testament heroes.
