Did God choose in advance who will be saved?

The debate over predestination and election is one of the oldest and most significant disagreements within Christianity, and it has divided sincere, Bible-believing Christians for centuries.

Reformed or Calvinist Christians hold to "unconditional election": God chose specific individuals for salvation before creation, based entirely on his own will rather than anything foreseen in the person, including their future faith. Arminian and many other Christians hold to "conditional election": God's choice is real, but it's based on his foreknowledge of who would freely respond in faith, preserving a more central role for genuine human choice.

This debate reached a major historical turning point in the early 1600s, when the Synod of Dort formally condemned the Arminian position within the Dutch Reformed church—though Arminian and Wesleyan traditions have continued since and remain widespread within global Christianity. Both sides affirm salvation is entirely by God's grace; they disagree about how human choice and God's sovereign choice relate.
