Could there be many universes instead of a God?

The multiverse—the idea that many universes exist beyond our own, possibly with different physical constants—is a real, seriously discussed idea in physics, arising from more than one line of theoretical work, including certain models of cosmic inflation and string theory. It isn't simply an idea invented to avoid a designer, though it is sometimes used that way in this specific debate.

A significant limitation is testability. Other universes, if they exist, generally can't be observed or interacted with using any method currently available or perhaps even conceivable—which has led some physicists, not only religious ones, to question whether multiverse proposals count as genuine science or as untestable speculation dressed in scientific language.

Even setting testability aside, some philosophers argue that appealing to a vast number of unseen universes to explain why our particular universe has life-permitting constants doesn't automatically settle the question—it shifts it rather than resolves it. This remains a live, unresolved debate rather than a decisive alternative to design.
