Were Adam and Eve real people?

Christians hold a genuine range of views, and it's worth being honest about the real tension involved rather than picking a side and pretending it isn't debated.

Traditionally, Adam and Eve are understood as the literal first human couple, from whom all humanity descended. Population genetics presents a real challenge to that: studies estimating human genetic diversity suggest humanity's ancestors never dropped below a population of roughly several thousand individuals, not two.

Different Christians respond differently. Some hold a historical first couple while treating the population evidence as unresolved or open to revision. Some read Adam and Eve as a real couple specially chosen as representative heads of a larger population, not the sole biological ancestors. Others read the account as a symbolic or theological narrative about humanity's origin and fall, without requiring individual historicity. A newer proposal argues a historical Adam and Eve could still be genealogical ancestors of everyone alive today even given the genetic evidence, without being humanity's only biological progenitors. None has become the single Christian consensus.
