Does archaeology support the Bible?

In a number of specific, well-documented cases, yes—though it's important to be clear about what archaeology can and can't actually confirm.

Archaeology is good at confirming the existence of real people, places, and practices—not at verifying miracles or theological claims directly. Within that scope, it has settled some real, once-debated questions. A stone inscription discovered in 1961 confirmed Pontius Pilate's exact title and role, matching the Gospels and the historian Josephus. Another discovered in 1993, the Tel Dan Stele, mentions the "House of David," providing the first clear evidence outside the Bible that David was a real historical dynasty founder, something some scholars had previously doubted.

Excavations have also confirmed specific details in John's Gospel that some earlier scholars assumed were invented for symbolic reasons—like the exact layout of the Pool of Bethesda, with its five colonnades, and the Pool of Siloam.

None of this proves every claim in the Bible historically accurate, and archaeology has raised its own genuine questions elsewhere. But the pattern of once-doubted biblical details later being confirmed is real and worth taking seriously.
