Why didn't Jesus show himself to everyone after he rose?

This is a real question the Bible doesn't fully answer, and it's worth resisting a tidy, overconfident response.

The book of Acts says Jesus appeared over about forty days specifically "to us whom God appointed as witnesses"—not to the general public or his critics. His followers were meant to become the ones who told others, rather than everyone receiving the exact same direct experience.

Some Christians suggest this fits a wider pattern: God generally doesn't remove the need for faith and testimony by overwhelming everyone with undeniable proof. Others point to what Jesus told Thomas—that there's something meaningful about believing without seeing. These are genuine attempts at an answer, not settled facts everyone agrees on.

What can be said honestly is that the Gospels don't hide this question or pretend there's no puzzle here. They present a real choice: trust the testimony of those they say did see him, or don't.
