Why has Christianity been used to justify wars and violence?

This has genuinely happened across history. It deserves an honest answer, not a defensive one. The Crusades, religious wars in Europe, and violence tied to colonial expansion are real, documented parts of history connected to Christian identity.

Historians generally agree these conflicts almost always involved tangled political, economic, and territorial motives, alongside religious language. Religion usually wasn't the sole cause. That's not an excuse, though—religious identity was still a genuine, active ingredient, not just a costume worn over "real" secular motives.

Jesus' own teaching runs the opposite direction: love your enemies, bless those who persecute you. When a disciple drew a sword to defend him, Jesus told him to put it away, warning that violence answered with violence.

So the accurate answer holds two things together: real historical violence connected to Christian identity, and a founder whose own teaching directly opposed it. That gap is real. It isn't something to paper over.
