Why does church culture sometimes look nothing like Jesus?

This is a fair, serious observation, and Christians have made it about their own churches for centuries—it isn't only an outside criticism.

Jesus' own life was marked by humility, self-sacrifice, and care for people with no status to offer him back. Church culture doesn't always reflect that. Sometimes it prioritizes image, power, comfort, or political alignment instead—things Jesus consistently resisted, even when religious leaders of his own day expected them.

That gap doesn't disprove Jesus. It shows the difference between what he taught and how imperfect people and institutions, acting in his name, sometimes behave. Christianity has always taught that everyone, including church leaders and church culture itself, falls short of Jesus' actual character.

Noticing the gap is appropriate, not cynical. The right response isn't to pretend it doesn't exist, but to hold church culture to the actual standard Jesus set, rather than assuming his standard and church culture are the same thing.
