Is gambling a sin?

The Bible never directly says "gambling is a sin"—there's no verse naming it. That surprises some people, since it's often talked about as an obvious one.

Instead, Christians reason from broader principles that clearly do apply. Scripture warns strongly against the love of money and the desire to get rich quickly, both of which can be exactly what's driving someone to gamble. It also emphasizes being a careful steward of what you have, rather than treating it carelessly.

Gambling also carries real, well-documented risk of addiction and harm—to the person gambling and to the people who depend on them financially. That risk is a serious, practical reason for caution, separate from any specific verse.

Because there's no direct command, this becomes a matter of conscience and wisdom: what's driving it, whether it's under control, and what it's actually doing to you and the people around you—rather than a flat yes-or-no rule.
