Is getting a tattoo a sin?

Leviticus does say "do not put tattoo marks on yourselves," and that verse is often quoted as if it settles this on its own. It's worth understanding where it comes from first.

That command sits inside a section of ancient purity laws. It was likely aimed at specific pagan mourning rituals that involved cutting and marking the skin for the dead. It addresses a particular ancient practice, not tattoos as a broad, timeless category.

Most Christians today, including fairly conservative ones, don't treat this verse as a flat modern ban. They don't treat nearby verses about mixing fabric types as binding today either. Instead, Christians reason from broader principles: what a tattoo represents, the motive behind getting one, and the New Testament's teaching that the body matters to God.

Because Scripture doesn't directly settle this, sincere Christians land in different places. It's treated as a matter of personal conscience more than a clear command.
