What does the Bible really say about sex before marriage?

There isn't one single verse that says, in those modern words, "premarital sex is a sin." What the Bible has instead is a consistent pattern. Sex is repeatedly framed as belonging within marriage, using a broad term usually translated "sexual immorality" that includes sex outside marriage.

Paul tells the Corinthian church to flee sexual immorality. He treats the body as something meant for God, not casual use. He tells the Thessalonians that God's will includes staying away from sexual immorality and controlling the body "in holiness and honor." Hebrews calls marriage, and the marriage bed specifically, honorable—implying sex belongs there.

Put together, these texts build a consistent picture, not just one flat rule. Mainstream Christian teaching has long read that pattern as excluding sex before marriage.

Modern relationships don't always map neatly onto ancient categories like betrothal, so applying this to every situation isn't always simple. The general teaching itself, though, is clear and consistent, not vague or invented.
