What happens after I die?

Christian teaching holds two things together here: something happens right away, and something bigger happens later.

Right away, the New Testament describes believers as immediately in the presence of Jesus after death. Paul writes about departing this life and being "with Christ," which he calls far better than staying. This isn't described as a final, finished state, though.

Later, Christianity teaches a future bodily resurrection. Not just souls floating somewhere—a real, renewed physical existence, following the pattern of Jesus' own resurrection. That's the more complete hope Christian teaching actually points to.

Christians hold some real differences on the details in between, like exactly what that state feels like. What's shared much more widely is the basic shape: presence with God now, and full bodily resurrection later. This is trust in what's promised, not something anyone can fully picture in advance.
