Life & Faith
How can I know God has forgiven me?
You can know it the way you know any serious promise is true: by trusting the person who made it, not by waiting to feel a certain way.
The Bible ties forgiveness to a specific promise, not to an emotional confirmation. If you confess honestly, God is described as faithful to forgive. That's based on his own character and what Jesus already did—not on how convinced or peaceful you happen to feel afterward.
That matters, because feelings are unreliable messengers. Guilt, anxiety, or just a bad day can make forgiveness feel unreal, even when it's genuinely happened. Waiting for a feeling before trusting the promise usually leads nowhere good.
If you keep doubting whether you're really forgiven, that's common. It isn't a sign of failure. The answer isn't to manufacture more certainty inside yourself. It's to keep returning to what's actually been promised, and let that be what you stand on.
