Why does God allow animals to suffer?

Animals aren't moral agents. They can't choose right or wrong, so they can't be blamed for anything—and Christianity doesn't teach that they are.

Christian teaching usually connects animal suffering to a bigger idea: the whole natural world, not just humanity, is described in the Bible as "groaning" and breaking down. That brokenness is tied to humanity's fall, not to anything animals did.

That explanation describes the situation more than it fully justifies it. It doesn't answer why animals specifically bear consequences that aren't their fault. Christians who take this seriously admit that gap honestly, rather than papering over it.

Christians disagree about some details here, including how literally to read Eden as free of animal death. What most agree on is a future hope: a promised restoration where even the natural world is made right, not just human beings.
