Why does prayer sometimes feel like talking to an empty wall?

That empty feeling is common, even among people who have prayed for years. It doesn't automatically mean God isn't there, or that your prayers don't matter.

Prayer isn't like a phone call, where you expect a voice to answer right back. Most of the time, God doesn't speak the way a person standing next to you would. That silence can feel a lot like talking to nobody, even when someone actually is listening.

Feelings change for ordinary reasons too—tiredness, distraction, sadness, or praying the same words so often they stop feeling like anything. None of that proves prayer stopped working.

The Bible doesn't pretend prayer always feels alive. Many of its own prayers were written by people who felt exactly like this.

You don't have to feel close to God for your prayer to be real. Sometimes praying straight through the emptiness, instead of waiting until it feels better, is what faith actually looks like.
