Why Believe

God

How do I know I'm not just imagining God?

You probably can't settle that question from the inside alone—and Christianity doesn't actually ask you to.

Psychological projection is real. People can generate powerful, convincing inner experiences that don't correspond to anything outside themselves. Simply feeling certain isn't proof of anything.

But that same doubt could be applied to any strong conviction, including confidence that God isn't real. Feelings, on their own, aren't reliable evidence either way.

That's why Christianity doesn't rest its case on private religious experience. It points to things you can examine from outside your own head—a historical claim about a man who died and was reportedly seen alive again, arguments about why the universe exists at all, and the shared sense that some things are really wrong.

If those hold up under real scrutiny, your experience of God doesn't have to carry all the weight by itself. And if they don't hold up, that's worth knowing too.
