Why do terrible things happen to people who love God?

Christianity does not promise that loving God will protect you from tragedy.

That can sound obvious until something terrible actually happens. Then the question becomes personal: "I trusted you. Why didn't you stop this?"

The Bible is surprisingly resistant to the idea that faithfulness guarantees safety. Job suffers. The Psalms contain desperate lament. Jesus is tortured and killed. The earliest Christians expected suffering rather than immunity from it.

That does not explain why one particular tragedy was allowed. And Christianity does not require you to invent a hidden lesson—"God did this to teach me something"—when you have no basis for knowing that.

Its claim is more limited and, in another sense, more radical: suffering does not prove abandonment; God can bring good from what is genuinely evil; and death and suffering will not have the final word.

That is hope, not an explanation for every wound.
