Life & Faith

Is my depression or anxiety a sign that my faith isn't strong enough?

No. Depression or anxiety doesn't mean you're failing God.

Christians can experience mental-health problems just as they can experience physical illness, exhaustion, or grief.

The Bible itself describes faithful people experiencing fear, despair and deep sadness. Elijah became so overwhelmed that he wanted to die (1 Kings 19:4). The Psalms contain cries of despair. Jesus experienced intense anguish before his death.

Prayer and faith can be important sources of strength, but seeking professional help doesn't mean you've stopped trusting God.

You can pray and see a therapist.

You can trust God and take medication prescribed for you.

Those aren't contradictions.

Mental health is complex, and neither you nor other Christians should automatically assume that depression or anxiety is caused by weak faith.
